No Child Left Behind

Ok, I am borrowing this from a fellow blogger who must of gotten it from some one else because I have seen it in school.

Today, the state department of education released the test scores in all the MN puublic schools, they were terrible. It had to do with the test being much harder and many other factors. Our wonderful Governor, knew what the test results said, because my school knew we where making our goals in September.

This football analogy is wonderful.......

The New Education System ---The Football Version

1. All teams must make the state playoffs and all MUST win the championship. If a team does not win the championship, they will be on probation until they are the champions, and coaches will be held accountable. If after two years they have not won the championship their footballs and equipment will be taken away UNTIL they do win the championship.

2. All kids will be expected to have the same football skills at the same time even if they do not have the same conditions or opportunities to practice on their own. NO exceptions will be made for lack of interest in football, a desire to perform athletically, or genetic abilities or disabilities of themselves or their parents.

ALL KIDS WILL PLAY FOOTBALL AT A PROFICIENT LEVEL!
3. Talented players will be asked to workout on their own, without instruction. This is because the coaches will be using all their instructional time with the athletes who aren't interested in football, have limited athletic ability or whose parents don't like football.

4. Games will be played year round, but statistics will only be kept in the 4th, 8th, and 11th game.

It will create a New Age of Sports where every school is expected to have the same level of talent and all teams will reach the same minimum goals. If no child gets ahead, then no child gets left behind!

I just love the world of education. I am all for being accountable for my kids learning but we all play at different levels in life.

Life in MN is quiet and wonderful. We are planning a big birthday party for Saturday afternoon. I cannot believe that my girl is going to be six already.
Comments:
I heard a lot of commentary on "All Things Considered" this afternoon about this...if we could only get them to put the subsidy money they gave the oil companies into education!

Great comment by Alan.
Way too much stress on teachers these days. It's more important in life to appreciate "differentness" or diversity than to assume everyone is the same!

You've got a hard job Mary. My hat's off to you.

Mary - i had this horrible conveersation with my mom. she was telling me that she didn't want tinyE to go to a public high school in st. paul because all their test scores were so low. and all i could say was - mom, don't give those tests more credibility then they're worth. there are a lot of lousy assumptions behind them.

happy birthday to kiran!

Here in BC we have this Right-wing Think Tank called the Fraser Institute. It ranks all of the schools in the province and, surprise surprise, the private schools rank higher than the public ones do. Schools with 300 English 12 students always seem to have a higher average score than schools with only 24 English 12 kids. The amazing thing is that parents decide on which school they will send their kids based on these rankings.

A big Happy Birthday to Kieran!

They like sports analogies at the Bush administration, and so do Republican congresspeople...send that to them.

I have so much respect for teachers,
I have many in my family.
After my brother retired..he gave it one year and then headed to Little Wound SD where he taught on an Indian Reservation..He said it was such a joy, because the students that showed up ..wanted to learn..
He is again retired but his young wife is a special Ed. teacher.
I think No Child Left Behind is leaving thousands out in the cold.
Cheryl Yecke with the help of Tim Pawlenty was able to turn this state into another Texas..I hope someone soon comes along and gives us some new and more productive ideas.
